UNICEF Pushes for Intensifying Efforts to Tackle Plastic Pollution

UNICEF urged communities to reduce dependence on single-use plastics by switching to reusable alternatives.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts to reduce plastic pollution by promoting proper disposal and recycling.

Speaking at a campaign to dispose of plastic garbage in honor of 2025 World Environment Day, Mr. Rahama Farah, Chief of the UNICEF Kano Field Office, emphasized the importance of supporting community-driven initiatives to reduce the negative environmental effects of plastic waste. One of the main environmental hazards is plastic pollution. According to Farah, more than 400 million tons of plastic are generated annually worldwide, and a sizable amount of that material ends up in rivers and waterways.

A three-kilometer walk from IBB Way to the Barhim Roundabout in Katsina city was undertaken as part of the campaign. Youths, UNICEF representatives, and members from the Katsina State Ministry of Environment gathered plastic and polythene debris from the streets during this event. Over 44 kilograms of plastic waste were gathered during the event.

Communities were encouraged by UNICEF to transition to reusable alternatives in order to lessen their reliance on single-use plastics. Additionally, it encouraged schools to start environmental groups and implement innovative projects that transform trash into art.
