AISI: U.S. Raw Steel Output Posted Modest Increase
The United States produced 1.720 million net tons (NT) of domestic raw steel during the week. The domestic mill capacity were utilized at a rate of 76.6%.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most recent weekly domestic production data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) shows that the week ending May 17, 2025, saw a roughly 0.60% increase in U.S. weekly raw steel production. This was based on a comparison between this week and the same week last year.
Over the course of the week, 1.720 million net tons (NT) of domestic raw steel were produced in the US. The utilization rate of the domestic mill capacity was 76.6%. It's important to remember that last year, during the same week, production reached 1.709 million NT, with a somewhat higher capacity utilization rate of 76.9%.

The week ending May 17, 2025, had a 1.1 percent decrease in output compared to the week ending May 10, 2025, when 1,740,000 net tons were produced and the capability utilization rate was 77.5 percent.
The Southern region produced the most, with 751,000 net tons. The Great Lakes region produced 540,000 net tons throughout the week. Other regions' productions (in thousand net tons) are North East-116, Midwest-253, and Western-60.
With a capability utilization rate of 75.0%, the adjusted year-to-date output as of May 17, 2025, was 32.786 million net tons. Compared to the same time in 2024, when production was 33.034 million net tons with a capacity utilization rate of 76.1%, this indicates a 0.8% reduction.
