EVRAZ Steel Mill Fined by OSHA for Safety Violations Leading to Worker’s Death

Gulliford got stuck between the stamp wheel and the rail line guardrail, succumbed to severe blunt force injuries, and died on the spot.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The EVRAZ steel mill in Pueblo has been fined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) authorities. A fine of $61,711 has been imposed on the company for safety violations that led to death of a worker in August last year.

The event happened on August 9, 2024. With the help of four other workers, a 26-year-old employee named Taylor Blake Gulliford was maintaining the stamp wheel of a rail-making machine. The stamp wheel assembly moved unexpectedly as a result of their failure to lock down the machine while they were operating. Gulliford died instantly after becoming trapped between the guardrail and the stamp wheel and suffering severe blunt force injuries.

The total fine amount is the sum of the fines for the four distinct code breaches, which range from $13,005 to $16,550. The OSHA investigation found that the business failed to provide its personnel with the required safety training or adhere to proper safety procedures to guarantee that the stamp wheel is securely secured and powered down before performing repair.

The Pueblo mill, which EVRAZ purchased in 2007, is regarded as the biggest manufacturer of standard and premium rail in North America.
