UNDP Partnership Aims to Eliminate Plastic Waste in Urban Areas

The project will focus on promoting sanitation efforts and reducing plastic waste in the above cities.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Japan, and the Government of Cambodia announced the start of a new cooperative initiative to eradicate plastic garbage in metropolitan areas. The partnership was signed at the end of February of this year and is called 'Strengthening Capacity to Handle Plastic Waste in Cities.'

In addition to the coastal provinces of Kep, Kampot, and Koh Kong, the project aims to create a cleaner environment in seven cities: Tbong Khmum, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. Its goal is to provide a sustainable approach to managing plastic garbage. The project's main goals will be to reduce plastic waste and support sanitation initiatives in the aforementioned cities.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, HE Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment urged the Ministry to step up awareness campaigns across schools, factories, local communities, and temples in the country. Additionally, he highlighted the need for placing more garbage bins to enable increased waste collection. Furthermore, he emphasized on the need to promote use of alternatives to plastic materials.

The new partnership marks a major step forward in efforts towards a cleaner and greener Cambodia, by effectively addressing the critical challenges posed by urban plastic waste, which is seen growing at a rapid pace.
