Top Industry Groups Pledged Strong Support for Trump's Steel Tariffs
However, the effectiveness of the Section 232 measures eroded over the subsequent years with exemptions granted on many countries and products.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): In a letter to President Donald Trump, five prominent business associations that speak for the US steel sector have stated their unwavering support for the reinstatement of 25% import duties on steel and the removal of the tariff program's exclusionary procedure.
A joint letter was signed by the U.S. OCTG Manufacturers Association (USOMA), the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA), the Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA), and the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).

The groups emphasized in the letter that the first Trump administration's comprehensive steel tariffs had resulted in a number of important changes, such as the reopening of steel mills that had been idled, the hiring of thousands of laid-off workers, and tens of billions of dollars in investments in new and improved facilities. However, with exclusions given to other nations and goods in the years that followed, the Section 232 measures' efficacy diminished.
In an effort to level the playing field for American steel manufacturers and their employees, industry associations applauded President Trump's recent actions to reinstate the integrity of the Section 232 steel tariffs.
