U.S. Steel Imports Surged in January This Year

The AISI research estimates that for the first month of this year, the market share of imported finished steel was 25%.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest statistics available from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that in January of this year, a total of 3.065 million net tons of steel were imported. This indicates a notable 43.5% increase over the previous month's imports. Furthermore, 2.305 million net tons of finished steel were imported during the month, a 26.5% rise.

The finished steel product with the biggest rise in import volumes was heavy structural forms, which had an approximately 199% increase in import volumes over December of previous year. Additionally, imports of reinforcing bars increased significantly, rising 191% month over month. Throughout the month, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, and Japan were the leading offshore suppliers.

Overall steel imports increased 4.5% and finished steel imports increased 5.9% during the 12-month period from February 2024 to January 2025.

The AISI research estimates that for the first month of this year, the market share of imported finished steel was 25%.

The products with a significant increase in imports over the 12-month period February 2024 to January 2025 compared to the previous 12-month period include tin plates as well as sheets and strip all other metallic coated, whose imports rose by 45% and 40%, respectively. The imports of cold rolled sheets and wire rods also edged higher by 27% and 22% respectively.
