AISI Responded to Trump’s Memorandum on Reciprocal Trade

The domestic U.S. steel industry has been repeatedly harmed by unfair trade practices from across the world, it said.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute's (AISI) president and CEO, Kevin Dempsey, issued a comment about the Trump administration's recently announced memorandum on reciprocal trade. It should be mentioned that President Trump's 'Fair and Reciprocal Plan' attempts to provide a comprehensive strategy for reestablishing equity in U.S. trade ties and combating non-reciprocal trade agreements.

'American steel producers know well the negative impact of foreign unfair trade practices, including subsidies, currency manipulation and other unfair and discriminatory policies and practices on domestic industries and their workers' AISI said in support of President Trump's decision. It claimed that unfair trade practices from around the globe had consistently hurt the American steel industry in the United States.

The global steel overcapacity reached 573 million metric tons in 2024 as a result of trade-distorting government policies and foreign government subsidies. This overcapacity may also contribute to increases in harmful imports into the U.S. market if it is not addressed.

The statement also noted that AISI is eager to collaborate with the U.S. Trade Representative and other important administration officials in order to create a strategy that will guarantee reciprocity in global trade and maintain the competitiveness of the American manufacturing sector, particularly the steel industry.
