SDI Filed Trade Petitions Against Multiple Countries
Between the first half of 2023 and the first half of 2024, the CORE imports from the above ten countries have recorded tremendous surge
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Fort Wayne, Indiana-based Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI), along with other organizations, petitioned the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) and the International Trade Commission (ITC) against as many as ten countries on corrosion resistant flat rolled steel (CORE).
The petition seeks imposition of antidumping duties against imports of CORE from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, UAE, and Vietnam. Also, it seeks to impose countervailing duties against imports of CORE from Brazil, Canada, Mexico, and Vietnam.
Between the first half of 2023 and the first half of 2024, CORE imports from the above ten countries surged tremendously, rising by 57% from less than 1.25 million tons to almost two million tons. Barry T. Schneider, president and chief operating officer of SDI, noted that the surge in unfairly traded imports has had a significant negative impact on the domestic steel industry.
Within 20 days, DOC is supposed to decide definitively whether to start the proposed investigation. In addition, ITC has 45 days to determine the preliminary extent of injury. The final rulings by the DOC and ITC are expected to be completed before October next year.
