AG Seeks to Shut Down Fire-Hit Providence Scrap Metal Yard

The repeated fire incident has exposed Recycled Metal’s inability to maintain safety at its operations, he added.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): R.I. Attorney General Peter Neronha announced that he is seeking to shut down the Recycled Metals scrap metal yard at Providence, which was hit by a devastating fire last Wednesday. This was the second fire incident at the yard during the current year.

The announcement follows the emergency hearing held by R.I. Superior Court Judge Brian Stern. At the hearing held Wednesday, the company attorneys had agreed to close the facility until a full hearing, which is scheduled to be held 11 AM this Friday. Neronha stated that he wants the company should be shut down on an emergency basis and put into receivership. The repeated fire incident has exposed Recycled Metal’s inability to maintain safety at its operations, he added.

The company has been involved in an ongoing case with the authorities, which commenced way back in 2015, for which a special master was appointed later on. Neronha pointed out that the special master strategy has not been working and that it is time for the court to seek better alternatives.

Meantime, the spokesperson for the company noted that it is currently working with the Providence Fire Department to learn the cause and origin of the fire. The fire is not believed to have caused any meaningful impact to the environment, he claimed.
