Global Plastic Treaty: Ottawa Round of Negotiations Come to an End
Several plastic producing countries as well as industry stakeholders opposed to imposition of global cap on plastic manufacturing.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The penultimate round of negotiations on a global plastic treaty to combat pollution has come to an end in Ottawa, Canada. The final meeting is scheduled to be held in South Korea later this year.

The Ottawa meeting witnessed both disagreements and progress. The shift in focus by participating nations towards the text of the proposed treaty is being considered as an important milestone. However, proposals to limit global plastic production resulted in heated debates among participants. Several plastic producing countries as well as industry stakeholders opposed to imposition of global cap on plastic manufacturing.
Even in the midst of above mentioned differences of opinion, the participant nations concluded the summit by committing to continue refining the treaty ahead of the scheduled final meeting. They emphasized on the need for creating a future world that is free from the ill effects of plastic pollution. Luis Vayas Valdivieso urged the continued co-operation of delegates in coming up with a comprehensive and effective treaty to address global plastic pollution.
The participants reiterated their commitment to overcome obstacles to deliver a global treaty that would protect the planet for future generations.
