AISI: U.S. Steel Shipments Surged M-o-M in March

It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 6.918 million net tons in February this year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests notable decline in steel shipments during the month of March this year compared with the same month a year ago. However, the shipments recorded surge over the prior month.

According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.372 million net tons in March 2023. This is modestly down by 5.9% from the shipments of 7.836 million net tons in the same month a year before. On the contrary, the shipments during the month witnessed modest surge by 6.6% from the previous month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 6.918 million net tons in February this year.

The cumulative shipments by U.S. domestic steel mills totalled 21.439 million net tons during the initial quarterly period of the year. This is modestly down by 6.1% when matched with the year before. The steel shipments by these mills had totalled 22.826 million net tons during Jan-Mar ‘22.

The report provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products during the first three months of 2023. The shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet and strip during this period declined by nearly 5% over the previous year. Also, shipments of cold rolled sheet and hot rolled sheet were down heavily by 8% each, AISI noted.
