SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): European packaging major DS Smith has unveiled some of the most exciting recycling technologies and investments made by the company in developing these technologies.
According to Stephanie Dalton, Innovation Manager at DS Smith, recycling and waste management needs digitalisation of systems to keep up with rising demand. It will provide companies with adequate information to help them make right decisions related to recycling, Dalton added.
She noted that the company is currently working in partnership with IBM to explore the use of image recognition technologies in identifying contaminates in recycling. In addition, it is also exploring the use of Near Infra-Red scanners to tackle plastic contamination in recycling. It has already been implemented on a trial basis at its mills in the UK and Italy.
The company pointed out the importance of harnessing the digital confidence of younger employees. Also, contamination must be dealt with proactively, for recycling to evolve. Increased investment in innovative technologies coupled with collaboration through the entire supply chain will help to achieve true closed loop recycling. A fundamental change is required in the way in which waste is viewed, the company said.
