ALACERO Presented Position Paper that Explores Current Profile of Steel Sector

The position paper presents the planning of the steel industry in the medium and long term and detailed action plan for curbing climate challenges.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Latin American Steel Association (ALACERO) presented a position paper titled “The Latin American Steel Industry in the Face of Climate Change”. It analyzes the current profile of the steel sector across the globe, especially those in Latin American countries.

The latest report by the UN panel had warned that the sustainability of the environment is at a turning point and that the climate system is witnessing unprecedented changes. The position paper presents the planning of the steel industry in the medium and long term and detailed action plan for curbing climate challenges.

According to Alejandro Wagner, Executive Director, Alacero, emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere accounts for nearly 80% of greenhouse gases. Also, nearly 7-9% comes from global steel industry. Latin America does not exceed 2.8% of the sector’s emissions. Furthermore, he added that steel produced in the Latin American region is one of the most sustainable on the planet.

The position paper highlights the need to create awareness on the relevance of steel usage in the path towards a sustainable future. It recommends formation of a common approach to public policies, tools and programs in order to achieve a low carbon steel sector by 2050.
