Catalyst Paper Tiskwat Mill to Close for Indefinite Period

The company is reportedly in talks with government authorities and partners about potential future opportunities of the site.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Paper Excellence announced its decision to curtail operations at its Catalyst Paper tiskwat mill in Powell River, B.C., for an indefinite period.

The receding global paper markets coupled with prices of the commodity, especially in Asia, have been causing significant financial losses. Despite whole-hearted efforts by its employees, the mill has not been able to remain profitable under challenging market conditions.

The company is reportedly in talks with government authorities and partners about potential future opportunities of the site. The mill offers notable benefits such as east access to deep water, natural gas, electricity and water supplies. The infrastructure facilities include biomass boiler with power generating capacity, wastewater treatment and solid waste disposal infrastructure.

Paper Excellence stated that the top priority would be the 206 employees who have been impacted by the decision. Wherever possible, relocation or secondment opportunities will be provided to other B.C. facilities, depending on current job vacancies. Moreover, all obligations under the collective agreements with Unifor Local 1 and Local 76 will be fulfilled, it said.

A small team of employees will continue towards security and monitoring purposes.
