Aurubis Terminated Copper Supply Contract with Nussir ASA

The companies had earlier reached an agreement on copper concentrate supplies from the new Nussir ASA mine in Norway’s Arctic.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Aurubis AG announced that it has terminated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Norwegian mine partner Nussir ASA. The companies had earlier reached an agreement on copper concentrate supplies from the new Nussir ASA mine in Norway’s Arctic.

Since the signing of the MoU, Aurubis has been regularly reviewing the progress on site. The decision to temporarily suspend the contract follows realization by the company that certain social aspects of the project need more consideration. It must be noted that the project had faced resistance from indigenous herders and fishermen, who claims that the mine could destroy pastures and spawning grounds for fish.

Michael Hellemann, Senior Vice President Commercial at Aurubis AG stated that the company regrets that it has made this decision at this point of time. It intends to fulfil all sustainability criteria, in order to be successful in the future, he added.

Meantime, Oystein Rushfeldt, CEO, Nussir assured that the copper mine will be built to the highest environmental standards. The Norwegian state bodies had granted permits to the project after reviewing its environmental and social impact studies in depth. Furthermore, the project has the full support of local government authorities too, he said.
