Brazil Produced 80% of South America's Crude Steel in October

The leading regional steel producer in October this year was Brazil.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The recent production statistics published by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) suggests that crude steel output by South American countries remained more or less unchanged during the month of October this year. The output by major producers-Brazil and Argentina recorded year-on-year surge in output.

The South American output totalled 3.479 million tonnes (Mt) during October 2020, as compared with the output of 3.466 Mt in the same month last year. The year-to-date production was down considerably by 12.4% at 30.767 Mt during the initial ten-month period of the year. The Jan-Oct ‘19 cumulative output had totalled 35.136 Mt.

The leading regional steel producer in October this year was Brazil. The Brazilian output totalled 2.784 Mt, accounting for more than 80% of the total regional crude steel output. The output by the country witnessed 3.5% surge when compared with the previous year. Argentina recorded an output of 382,000 tonnes, more or less flat when compared with the Oct ‘19 output. In third place was Colombia with an output totalling 110,000 tonnes. The other key producers were Chile (105,000 tonnes) and Peru (50,000 tonnes).

The Venezuelan crude steel production surged higher significantly by 83% when matched with the previous year. The output by Uruguay was down by nearly 26%. Paraguay recorded approximately 38% decline in output during the month.
