Controversial Scrap Metal Yard Hit by Major Explosion and Fire
According to Chicago Fire Department, the cause of the explosion remained unclear.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The General Iron Industries scrap metal yard in the 1900 block of North Clifton Avenue, Ranch Triangle neighbourhood reported multiple explosions and fire. The facility has been ordered to remain closed until further city order. No injuries were reported.
The incident took place around 9 AM Monday, said Chicago police. An explosion was reported at the metal shredding conveyor system at the 1909 N. Clifton Ave., facility. The explosion was followed by a fire, which sent a fireball and plumes of smoke into the air. Fire crews responded shortly after the explosion.
According to Chicago Fire Department, the cause of the explosion remained unclear. The Fire Department has launched an investigation in partnership with the Chicago Department of Public Health. All shredding operations at the plant have been ceased with immediate effect. The company has launched an internal investigation to unveil possible causes, including potential sabotage. Furthermore, it promised full co-operation with city officials in connection with city investigation.
The surrounding neighbourhood reported increased pollution readings, following the explosion. However, the air quality tests ruled out possibilities of any apparent immediate health risk to residents.
