Norbord Announces Indeterminate Curtailment at 100 Mile House OSB Mill
The decision is likely to impact approximately 160 employees when the production come to a stop in August 2019.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Norbord Inc., announced plans to indefinitely suspend operations at its oriented strand board (OSB) mill in 100 Mile House in B.C. central interior. According to company press release, all mill operations will be stopped indefinitely effective August this year. Aggravating wood supply shortage and high wood prices are cited as the reasons for the production stoppage. The decision is likely to impact approximately 160 employees when the production come to a stop in August 2019.
Peter Wijnbergen, president and CEO, Norbord stated that the mountain pine beetle epidemic has restricted wood supply for the past decade. The crisis was further exacerbated by series of significant wildfires that engulfed the province during recent years. As a result, the mill has been facing acute shortage in wood supply. The events have also led to dramatic rise in wood prices, thus making the mill operations uneconomical. In a press release, Wijnbergen said that the difficult decision is in response to extraordinary circumstances.

He called for coordinated, province-wide efforts to tackle the decline of mills in the region.
The Norbord 100 Mile House mill has a production capacity of nearly 440 million square feet per annum.
