Hong Kong Officially Opens Its First Integrated E-Waste Recycling Facility

Initially, the facility will be able to process nearly 30,000 tonnes of electronic waste per annum, with the potential to almost double the processing capacity within one year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hong Kong has announced official opening of its first integrated e-waste recycling facility.

The opening ceremony was held on March 19, 2018, which was attended by Carrie Lam, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Chief Executive; Wong Kam-sing, secretary for the environment and Dr Axel Schweitzer, chairman of ALBA Group's board of directors. The new state-of-the-art Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Treatment and Recycling Facility (WEEETRF) was constructed by Alba Integrated Waste Solutions, Hong Kong, a subsidiary of the Berlin, Germany-headquartered ALBA Group. The ceremony was followed by a plant tour.

Schweitzer highlighted the coincidence of the opening of the facility with the company 50th anniversary. The company is proud for being chosen as a partner by the Hong Kong government. The ceremony marks a major recycling milestone in the history of Hong Kong. The contract with the Hong Kong government has been the largest single contract in the history of the company, Schweitzer added.

Carrie Lam congratulated the contractor ALBA and stated that Hong Kong looks forward to continued contributions during the next ten year contract period. The project will underpin the producer responsibility scheme on regulated e-wastes. Meantime, Wong Kam-sing stated that the administration plans to implement strict regulations so as to ensure that the facility recycles only electronic waste generated within Hong Kong and not those imported from other countries.
