Bank of Korea Issues Silver and Brass Coins to Commemorate Pope’s Visit

The Bank of Korea has launched a set of two coins to commemorate the visit of Pope Francis. His Holiness visit is scheduled from 14th August to 18th august. This is his first visit to Asia since the last year inauguration of his Papal.

SEOUL (Scrap Monster): The Bank of Korea has launched a set of two coins to commemorate the visit of Pope Francis. His Holiness visit is scheduled from 14th August to 18th august. This is his first visit to Asia since the last year inauguration of his Papal.

The Bank of Korea has released silver and brass coins for spreading the message of reconciliation and peace, the main purpose of the Pope’s visit. There is a total of 90,000 silver and brass coins.

The coins have the depictions of both Catholic symbols of peace and traditional symbols of Korea. On the obverse side, silver coin has the “taegeuk” symbol, hallmark of South Korea’s national flag and crosses and a dove bearing an olive branch. On its reverse side, there is an inscription “POPE FRANCIS’VISIT TO KOREA” above the design of the papal coat of arms. Below the crest, there is the text “2014 BANK OF KOREA 50000 WON”.

The brass coin has the picture of the shape of a cross together with lilies, olive branches, a stylized dove and the rose of Sharon, the country’s national flower. The brass coin is of 10,000 Won. Its reverse side is as same as that of the silver coin.

The Bank said 81,000 coins will be available in Korea and can buy it through reservations at Woori and Nonghyup commercial banks. The remaining 9,000 coins will be sold to overseas collectors.
