EU repair rules start reshaping gadget design as global e-waste could jump 32% by 2030

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Europe's push to make electronics easier to fix is beginning to change the way gadgets are designed, and that shift could have major consequences as the world's e-waste crisis continues to worsen.
The shift comes as repairability is no longer treated as a niche issue but as a central part of tech policy, with the European Union rolling out rules intended to help devices last longer, create less waste, and cost less for consumers to maintain.
Here's what to know
In the EU, newer product rules increasingly treat repairability as part of sustainability policy, aiming to keep electronics in service longer and slow the growth of e-waste. According to The Conversation, that approach builds on earlier ecodesign and energy-label efforts while making fixability a core design concern.
The scale of the problem is large. Citing the U.N.'s Global E-waste Monitor, The Conversation reported that global e-waste nearly doubled between 2010 and 2022 and could rise another 32% by 2030. Over a similar span, the volume of electrical and electronic equipment placed on the EU market increased from 8.4 million tons (7.6 million tonnes) in 2012 to 15.9 million tons (14.4 million tonnes) in 2023.
Because less than a third of that waste is recycled, policymakers are looking beyond what happens after products are discarded. The broader objective is to keep devices useful for longer by making repairs a practical alternative when something breaks.
That is harder to do when products are built to resist opening or servicing. Many electronics now have sealed designs and tightly integrated parts, making batteries and other important components much tougher for users or technicians to remove and replace than they once were.
For consumers, the pattern is familiar: a device fails, spare parts are hard to find, repair information is limited, and buying a replacement often seems faster or cheaper.
Smartphones have shown this problem especially clearly. Batteries that users could once replace themselves had become uncommon by 2020, increasing the likelihood that a technical issue would lead to an earlier phone replacement.
To measure these obstacles, The Conversation reported that the European Commission's Joint Research Centre developed a framework for assessing a product's repairability. It looks at the device's design — including the tools, fasteners, time, and effort required to replace parts — and also at manufacturer support such as repair documentation and access to spare parts.
That work also led to the development of repairability scores intended to help shoppers compare products before buying. Smartphones and tablets were the first categories to use them, and printers, coffee machines, and vacuum cleaners were identified as priority products for expanding the system.
What's being done?
Two EU policies are central to the effort. According to The Conversation, the 2024 European Sustainable Products Regulation creates a broader framework for product sustainability, while the EU Batteries Regulation sets rules around battery replaceability, together pushing manufacturers toward electronics that last longer and are easier to repair.
There are already indications that companies are adjusting. Newer smartphones and tablets feature glue-free screens, electrically releasable adhesives, or back covers that can be opened with a screw.
The shift is also showing up outside the phone market. Some laptops now come with replaceable keyboards, batteries held in place by only a few loosened screws, and upgradable storage or memory, while even harder-to-repair devices like wearables are starting to include more accessible components without sacrificing water resistance.
