SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): OceanaGold is set to enter Australia’s mining sector through an A$776 million (about $553 million) takeover of Ausgold. The acquisition will help the Canadian miner to gain control of the Katanning gold project in Western Australia. Furthermore, it will strengthen OceanaGold’s long-term production outlook.
Under the proposed transaction, Ausgold shareholders will receive A$1.36 per share, representing a 27.7% premium to the company’s latest closing price. The deal will primarily involve OceanaGold shares, though shareholders will be provided with an option to choose a cash alternative. Following completion, Ausgold investors will hold approximately 6-8% of OceanaGold.
The transaction has received unanimous backing from Ausgold’s board. Dundee, which owns a 7.7% interest in Ausgold, has also indicated that it will support the proposal. The deal is expected to close in December 2026, subject to shareholder approval and other standard conditions.
Katanning, located around 275 km southeast of Perth, is expected to become a key addition to OceanaGold’s growth pipeline. Development requires approximately A$355 million in initial capital. OceanaGold plans further drilling through 2027, followed by an updated technical report in 2028. First production is anticipated in 2029.
