SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Aluminum Association has called on policymakers to prioritize stronger regional trade enforcement and tariff alignment to protect North America's aluminum industry from unfairly traded imports.

The association released an updated policy framework outlining measures designed to strengthen the U.S. aluminum supply chain, enhance trade transparency, and better coordinate regional efforts against aluminum imports from non-market economies, particularly China.

According to the group, the current USMCA framework contains loopholes that have enabled unfairly traded aluminum to enter North America through transshipment routes, including Mexico.

The association’s recommendations include harmonizing external aluminum tariffs across North America and expanding data-sharing and import-monitoring systems. It also calls for addressing growing exports of valuable scrap materials to non-market economies, while preserving the free flow of aluminum scrap among the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The association argues that the USMCA review presents an opportunity to create a stronger regional manufacturing platform capable of competing with state-supported aluminum producers abroad.
