Illegal Gold Mine Collapse Kills 28 in Angola, Two Missing

Police spokesman Gaspar Luis Inacio said search-and-rescue teams were continuing efforts to locate two individuals believed to still be trapped beneath the debris.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): At least 28 people have been killed following the collapse of an illegally operated gold mine in northern Angola. Two are still missing, authorities confirmed.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday, when a landslide struck an unauthorized mining site in Agola, located in Bengo Province, northeast of the capital Luanda. According to police, the victims were aged between 18 and 40. Among the dead were 13 members of the same family.

Emergency responders and local authorities rushed to the scene following the collapse, while injured survivors were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

At least three victims received medical care at Bengo Central Hospital, confirmed health supervisor Francisco Rodrigues. Furthermore, he added that all three are conscious and out of danger and there is no immediate need for transfer to other medical facilities

Illegal artisanal mining remains a persistent challenge across parts of Angola, where impoverished communities often resort to informal gold extraction despite serious safety risks and minimal regulatory oversight.

The heightened global gold prices have resulted in increased informal mining activity across resource-rich African nations.
