Recycle B.C. Extends Pink Box Recycling Program to Vancouver Apartments

Metro Vancouver data shows that recyclable plastics still represent nearly 20 percent of the region’s waste stream, second only to organics.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Recycle B.C., the non-profit responsible for residential packaging and paper recycling across British Columbia, is expanding its pink box recycling program for flexible plastics to apartments and condominiums in Vancouver, targeting higher recovery in dense urban housing.

Pink recycling carts for multi-family buildings are now being delivered, with collection of items such as plastic bags, wrappers, and zipper-lock pouches set to begin on February 16. The carts will operate like existing blue bins already used for other recyclable materials in apartment and condo buildings.

“Flexible plastics are a common part of everyday packaging, and making them easier to recycle is an important step toward improving recovery,” said Sam Baker, Executive Director of Recycle B.C.

Metro Vancouver data shows that recyclable plastics still represent nearly 20 percent of the region’s waste stream, second only to organics. Currently, many residents must collect flexible plastics at home and take them to recycling depots.

Launched last year, the pink box program is already available in Maple Ridge and West Vancouver, with curbside expansion planned in the Regional District of Central Okanagan in May. Recycle B.C. said flexible plastic recovery stands at recovery.
