Crews tackle scrap metal fire at recycling centre

People in the area were initially urged to keep windows and doors closed due to a significant amount of smoke.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Firefighters spent the night tackling a blaze involving a 'large amount of scrap metal' at a recycling site.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to Station Road, East Tilbury at 20:16 GMT on Thursday.

People in the area were initially urged to keep windows and doors closed due to a significant amount of smoke.

In a social media post at 22:50, the service said the flames were surrounded and under control but four fire engines were expected to remain there overnight to ensure the area was safe.

'The fire involves a large amount of scrap metal. A specialist crane on site is moving the scrap so firefighters can reach and tackle hotspots effectively,' it said.

'Smoke in the area has reduced and there is currently no wider impact.'
