AISI Hailed Trump’s Trade Deals with Malaysia and Cambodia

The trade body appreciated Trump administration’s continuing efforts to collaborate with trading partners to address global steel excess capacity and unfair trade in steel.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has issued a statement applauding President Trump’s signing of new trade agreements with Malaysia and Cambodia, praising the administration’s continued commitment to addressing global steel overcapacity and unfair trade practices.

Kevin Dempsey, President and CEO of AISI, commended President Trump, Ambassador Greer, and the U.S. trade team for securing Malaysia’s commitment to join the Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity and take concrete steps to curb excessive steel production. He emphasized that such initiatives strengthen global cooperation and support fair trade in the steel industry.

Dempsey also welcomed key provisions in both trade agreements aimed at enhancing collaboration and information exchange with the United States on antidumping and countervailing duty enforcement, helping to tackle unfair trade practices in steel markets worldwide.

Additionally, AISI highlighted Malaysia’s pledge to avoid export bans on critical minerals, remove rare earth export quotas to the U.S., and partner with American companies to develop its rare earth and critical minerals sector.

The Institute stated that these agreements mark a significant step forward in promoting fair competition, strengthening global supply chains, and ensuring a level playing field for the U.S. steel and manufacturing industries.
