Domtar Kingsport Mill Honored for Sustainability Excellence

It must be recalled that the mill houses North America’s second-largest recycled containerboard machine.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Domtar’s Kingsport Mill has been awarded the prestigious Fred Schmitt Award for Outstanding Corporate Leadership by the National Recycling Coalition (NRC), honoring the company’s exemplary efforts and innovative leadership in sustainability initiatives.

The mill was nominated by the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce in recognition of its transformative conversion into Tennessee’s largest recycled manufacturer. The facility also houses North America’s second-largest recycled containerboard machine, underscoring its significance in the region’s recycling and manufacturing landscape.

The conversion project, which took nearly two years, transformed an uncoated freesheet paper machine into Domtar’s first 100% recycled containerboard facility. Today, the mill produces approximately 600,000 tons of high-quality recycled linerboard and corrugated medium annually, consuming nearly 700,000 tons of recycled boxes and paper, exemplifying Domtar’s commitment to circular economy practices.

Tony Clary, interim mill manager, described the recognition as a tremendous honor, emphasizing that it reflects the dedication, innovation, and hard work of the Kingsport team. He added that the award demonstrates Domtar’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and circularity, setting a benchmark for the industry.
