ANIPAC Collects 666Kg of Plastic Waste in Mexico City

According to ANIPAC, Mexico leads PET bottle recovery in the region, collecting 63% of all PET containers nationwide.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The National Association of the Plastics Industry (ANIPAC) collected 666kg of plastic waste for recycling and transformation into new products during the fifth edition of Eco-Cambalache (Eco-Exchange), held in Mexico City.

The event aimed to promote responsible plastic waste management and encourage community participation in the circular economy model. Residents exchanged recyclable plastic waste for basic household products, reinforcing the role of citizens as the first link in the recycling chain.

“On average, each person in Mexico generates a little more than 1kg/d of waste, which represents over 42Mt/y of solid waste nationwide. We need urgent and effective measures that offer solutions from the source, such as reducing consumption habits, reusing products, extending their lifespan and separating waste, which is essential to boost recycling,” said Raúl Mendoza, General Director, ANIPAC.

Mendoza emphasized the importance of collaboration between authorities, industry and citizens to implement effective strategies that reduce ecosystem pollution. “Learning to identify the types of plastic for proper separation and disposal is the first step to giving waste circularity,” he said.

The initiative is supported by several companies, including DART, STYROPEK, INBOPLAST, WINTECH, BRS México, Global Plastics México, and Rennueva, which promoted the Mobile Interactive Recycling Museum, a space that demonstrates how materials can be transformed into new products while fostering awareness of the circular economy.

According to ANIPAC, Mexico leads PET bottle recovery in the region, collecting 63% of all PET containers nationwide. The country has more than 500 recycling companies, including 26 specialized PET plants, enabling the processing of over 70% of post-consumer PET bottles.
