Advocacy Group Urges Canada to Lead Fight Against Plastic Pollution
The administration must focus on immediate actions to reduce domestic plastic waste.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading independent charity Oceana Canada has urged the Canadian administration to take initiative to lead the world in its fight against rising plastic pollution.
The action comes after the world's nations, including Canada, failed to come to an agreement on a global plastics pact in spite of their best efforts. The nation had backed a convention that included clauses to reduce production, do away with single-use plastics, and forbid the use of dangerous plastic compounds in goods.

The administration needs to concentrate on taking quick steps to cut down on household plastic trash. The nation generates about 2.4 million tonnes of garbage from plastic packaging annually, it warned. Furthermore, it is anticipated that the number will increase dramatically in the years to come. Oceana Canada emphasized that domestic leadership is the first step.
To guarantee circular systems through appropriate material reuse, the nation must implement stringent rules. Additionally, materials that are incompatible with waste management infrastructure need to be phased out. It also emphasized the necessity of outlawing dangerous plastic compounds that are frequently included in textiles, apparel, food packaging, and kid's toys.
Canada has 70% of its land area covered by oceans, making it the country with the longest coastline in the world. This puts the nation in a position to manage the oceans sustainably on a national and international level.
By the way, the largest advocacy organization in the world devoted exclusively to ocean protection is Oceana Canada.
