Stainless Steel Melt Shop Production Soared in Q1 2025

According to the figures published by the trade body, the melt shop production totalled 15.547 million metric tonnes in Q1 this year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The world stainless association has released production figures for the initial quarter of the current year. The melt shop production surged higher during the quarter, upon comparison with the corresponding quarter a year before.

According to the figures published by the trade body, the melt shop production totalled 15.547 million metric tonnes in Q1 this year. This is 6.2% higher than the production which totalled 14.644 million metric tonnes in Q1 2024. However, upon comparison with the production of 16.541 million metric tonnes in the sequential quarter, the Q1 2025 production is down significantly by 6%.

Europe and the USA recorded consistent growth in production year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter. The European production recorded a q-o-q and y-o-y growth of 15.4% and 2.9% respectively. Meanwhile, the U.S. production was substantially higher by 25.4% over the sequential quarter. Also, the country reported 8.6% jump in production when compared with Q1 last year.

The Chinese stainless steel melt shop production edged lower by 10.4%, upon comparison with Q4 2024. In contrast, the production was up by 11.2% year-on-year.

Asia without China and South Korea posted dip in output. Also, Others, including Brazil, Indonesia, Russia, South Africa and South Korea recorded reduced output.
