U.S. Plastics Pact Impact Report Calls for Urgent Collective Action

According to the report, the Pact witnessed remarkable progress in its efforts to transform how plastics are designed, used, and reused.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The 2023–2024 Impact Report from the U.S. Plastics Pact details notable advancements in the direction of a plastics circular economy. It urges for immediate group action to address the complexities of plastics sustainability while also acknowledging the accomplishments.

The paper claims that the Pact made significant strides in changing the way plastics are made, used, and recycled. With major increases in recyclability, the percentage of people using sustainable packaging rose to 50%, which is far higher than the 36% rate in 2021. By increasing packaging's post-consumer recycled (PCR) content to 11%, the Activators were able to move closer to the previously mentioned target of 30% by 2025.

According to the report's results, U.S. Pact Activators produced 5.57 million MT of the total weight of plastics sold in the United States in 2023. U.S. Pact Activators produced one-third of the weight of all plastic packaging in the United States. Additionally, by tonnage, PET bottles, HDPE bottles, and other rigid packaging made up the top three package formats represented in the U.S. Pact.

The report emphasizes the importance of individual accountability, public-private partnerships, and coordinated federal action.
