DS Smith Declared Major Investment in Portugal Packaging Facilities

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith announced that it has made investments exceeding Euro 50 million at its packaging facilities in Portugal over the past three year period. This is in response to the rising demand for sustainable fibre-based packaging solutions in the region, it noted.
According to company press release, these investments were focused on streamlining the technology upgrade and promote renewable energy solutions. DS Smith had purchased two top-of-the-range fluting machines for its packaging facilities in Oporto and Leiria packaging facilities. In addition, the corrugator unit at its packaging facility in Lisbon was upgraded with the installation of a 2,800mm wide Dry End. DS Smith has also invested in a large processing machine for corrugated cardboard solutions.
The packaging major has commissioned the installation of solar panels at its packaging facilities in Esmoriz, Leiria and Lisbon, which will help the company to produce electricity for its own consumption. This, coupled with renewable energy investments in Iberia, are expected to lead to around 34% cut in carbon dioxide emissions per year.
DS Smith Packaging Division runs six factories, two recycling mills and a kraft paper mill in Portugal.
