DNR Now Accepting Applications for Electronic Recycling Projects
Since the start of the program, more than 400 million pounds of electronics have been recycled.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is now accepting applications for the Electronic Recycling, or E-Cycle, Wisconsin Collection Grant.
The DNR will award up to $100,000 in grants to businesses, local and tribal governmental bodies and nonprofits that organize sites and events collecting electronic waste. Electronic waste includes devices, phones, cords and things of that nature.
The amount awarded for grants depends on available funds from fees electronic manufacturers pay as part of the E-Cycle Wisconsin program. The program was created in 2010 as part of the state's recycling law which banned many electronics from the trash. The collection sites/programs should be active from at least September 2024 until the end of next year.
The DNR will give priority to projects in counties that don't have a permanent collection site. This includes projects in Calumet, Crawford, Florence, Forest, Green Lake, Iowa, Iron, Jackson, Marinette, Price and Taylor counties.
Since the start of the program, more than 400 million pounds of electronics have been recycled.
In the past two years, the DNR awarded more than $135,000 to 29 projects in rural counties. These projects supported the development of three permanent collection sites in Kewaunee and Pepin counties and 30 one-day collection events between August 2022 and May 2024.
'Our first two rounds of grants were very successful, contributing to unprecedented access to electronics recycling throughout Wisconsin. We're excited to help more rural communities offer electronics collection to their residents,' said Sarah Murray, DNR E-Cycle Wisconsin coordinator. 'Our goal is to expand access to convenient, affordable electronics recycling across Wisconsin.'
Applications are due on Wednesday, July 31 at 5 p.m.
