Permanent Closure of Riddle, Oregon Sawmill to Leave 93 Workers Jobless

The affected employees will be provided all possible assistance including severance package and also necessary backing in finding new employment.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): C&D Lumber Co. stated that the company will permanently close its sawmill operations in Riddle, Oregon. This is the fourth sawmill in the Oregon region to shut operations in recent months.

The shutdown of the family-owned business will lead to lay off of 93 workers. According to company officials, the mill will stop operations effective 2nd May, 2024. However, the operations will continue for at least a few months, until all the remaining inventory is processed and sold. The affected employees will be provided all possible assistance including severance package and also necessary backing in finding new employment.

The family-owned business closes its doors after 130 years of operations. The company was founded in 1890.

The company blamed unprecedented challenges facing the company, including fluctuating market prices, rising operating costs and timber shortages as the reasons behind the closure decision. The fall in output from public forestland coupled with the impacts caused by 2021 Private Forest Accord have been squeezing smaller players like C&D.

The Board of Directors of C&D Lumber Co. extended deepest gratitude to all its past and present employees for their dedication, hard work and passion. Furthermore, it also thanked customers, suppliers and community for their support and partnership over the past several years.
