Cambodia Launched Innovative Project to Turn Plastic Waste Into Furniture
The company pays KHR300 to refuse collectors for every kilogram of plastic waste brought to the facility.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The facility located in Sangkat 1 in Sihanoukville Province by Tontoton- a firm set up by an Israeli national has implemented a novel project in Cambodia to turn plastic waste into furniture. The project collects plastic waste from seas and processes them to produce useful furniture including tables, chairs and cabinets.
Long Dimanche, Deputy Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, who visited the facility earlier this week, commended the efforts of the company to promote a circular plastics economy. It has helped in removing huge volumes of plastic bags and bottles from seas and coastal areas, which otherwise could have caused serious environmental dangers. He encouraged citizens to collect plastic products and sell them to the company.
According to Barak Ekshtein, Founder and Director of Tontoton, the company collects approximately 200 tons of plastic waste every month. The facility employs innovative technology to grind all the collected plastic to produce plywood, which in turn is used in the construction of various furniture items.
The company pays KHR300 to refuse collectors for every kilogram of plastic waste brought to the facility.
The facility is considered as a major step in Cambodia’s journey towards achieving the 2050 goals of turning out to be a carbon-neutral and high-income country.
