Scrap Metal Pile Burns at Landfill

Landfill employees and firefighters began firefighting efforts, the county said.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A fire at the rear of the Pitt County Transfer Station off of Allen Road released a large plume of smoke Monday afternoon but did not damage property or pose a threat.

Greenville Fire-Rescue received a call for an outside fire off of Allen Road at 4:43 p.m., according to Pitt County Government, which operates the solid waste transfer facility.

Investigation into that smoke column led to the rear of the transfer station where a large scrap metal pile was burning, the news release said.

Landfill employees and firefighters began firefighting efforts, the county said.

The was contained to the large pile and did not affect landfill operations or threaten property.

Units from Greenville Fire/Rescue, Red Oak, Winterville Community, Bell Arthur, Forestry, Red Cross, Pitt County Emergency Management and EMS responded along with members of Pitt County Government senior leadership.

Red Oak Fire Department will remain on-scene until the fire is extinguished, the release said.
