Steel Industry Urged to Establish Action Plan to Reduce Carbon Emissions
In the summit, India had committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2070.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Ministry of Steel in India has ordered all stakeholders of steel industry to draw an action plan in a time-bound manner to reduce carbon emissions by the sector. This is in accordance with the government’s COP26 commitments. Incidentally, the iron and steel industry in the country accounts for nearly 12% of the total carbon dioxide emissions, which is significantly higher than the global industry’s share in the world carbon footprints.

The Ministry noted that the Indian steel industry has to do a lot to reduce its emissions, so as to help the country fulfil the commitments made during the COP26 global climate summit held in November last year. In the summit, India had committed to achieve net zero emissions by 2070.
In a recently held meeting with industry stakeholders, the Ministry had called for promoting the use of hydrogen in producing iron and the use of carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) technologies for lowering emissions. It also extended full support to the industry’s efforts to develop new alternate processes and technologies to address the issues faced by the sector by providing grants for R&D works. For instance, the government has been involved in concerted efforts to make solar power more accessible.
