DS Smith Accelerated Circular Economy Initiatives

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith announced that it will continue to focus on efforts to explore how alternative fibers can be used as raw materials in paper and packaging products. The £100m R&D and innovation package announced by the company in 2021 has further accelerated its circular economy initiatives.

According to Thomas Ferge, Paper and Board Development Director, DS Smith, there has been an increased interest in alternative fibers in the market. This has prompted the company to look out for new products that are more sustainable. The company is keen on producing circular solutions that eliminate problematic plastics in packaging, thus making it more environment-friendly.

Simultaneously, the company has been exploring various pulping processes, mechanical and chemical treatments at the mills to ensure the right paper properties, as part of its ongoing investment in people and new ideas.

The company had recently unveiled a Fibre and Paper Development Laboratory at Kemsley Paper Mill in Kent, UK for the purpose of testing innovative alternative fibers. Apart from in-house R&D programmes, DS Smith has also been collaborating with other companies that try put innovative techniques for papermaking.
