ArcelorMittal Announced Acquisition of Steel Recycling Business
The business will be continued to be run by the current management.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading steelmaker ArcelorMittal announced acquisition of Scottish recycling business, John Lawrie Metals Ltd. This is part of the company’s ongoing strategy to boost the use of scrap steel in order to lower carbon dioxide emissions from steelmaking. The deal was concluded in end-February this year. The business will be continued to be run by the current management.
Aberdeen, UK-based John Lawrie Metals has three other operating sites located in northeast Scotland. The company, which was named as the Metal Recycling Business of the Year at the 2021 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management, is a major exporter of ferrous scrap to steel producers mainly in western Europe.

Geert Van Poelvoorde, CEO, ArcelorMittal Europe said that the acquisition of John Lawrie represents a further step in its strategy to boost the use of scrap steel across its steelmaking operations. The company foresees strong potential for growth in the ferrous scrap processing business, aided by robust demand growth from European countries. The increased use of scrap steel in EAF and BF steelmaking routes has been one of the key elements of ArcelorMittal’s decarbonisation plan, he added.
