Stora Enso Invests in Swedish Fluff Pulp Production Site
The obsolete bleaching line will be decommissioned and closed in Q2 2024.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Stora Enso announced investment of Euro 40 million in new technology, aimed at improving the climate footprint at its Skutskar, Sweden fluff pulp production site. The investment will result in restructuring of the site and is expected to deliver significant cost efficiency. Moreover, it will sharpen Stora Enso’s competitiveness in the growing hygiene products sector.

The proposed investment in bleaching technology will enable the number of bleach lines to be reduced from three to two. Furthermore, it will improve cost competitiveness and create opportunities for future development. The implementation of the project is scheduled to commence during Q1 2022, with the upgraded bleaching plant expected to become operational in Q2 next year. The obsolete bleaching line will be decommissioned and closed in Q2 2024.
The investment is in line with Stora Enso’s ambitious climate targets. The company has committed to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by 50% by 2030. The transition to new technology will reduce the site’s carbon footprint by 5%, said the company press release.
Incidentally, Skutskar site has an estimated production capacity of 540,000 tonnes per annum. It employs nearly 420 people.
