Smurfit Kappa Carbon Reduction Targets Received SBTi Approval

The company had received 5 stars from “Support the Goals” in recognition of its support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) announced that it has granted approval to the Smurfit Kappa’s ambitious carbon reduction targets, saying that they are consistent with levels required to meet the Paris Agreement goals. The Scope 1 and Scope 2 emission reduction targets will contribute to keeping global warming to well below 2 degree Celsius, it noted.

The approval validates the company’s sustainability leadership in the paper-based packaging sector. In 2020, Smurfit Kappa had announced net zero fossil emissions target by 2050, apart from launching new sustainability targets under Better Planet 2050 initiative. The company had received 5 stars from “Support the Goals” in recognition of its support of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

SBTi defines and promotes best practice in science-based target setting and independently assesses companies carbon reduction targets.
