FPAC Spotlights Bright Prospects of Forest Sector in Canada

The rising fire incidents and pest attacks have significantly impacted forest carbon emissions.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) - the body that represents the country’s forest products sector, highlighted opportunities for forestry sector in Canada in the forthcoming years.

According to FPAC, Canada has an important competitive edge over world countries, putting it above all other countries, including larger forested countries such as Russia and France. The sector looks forward to concerted efforts to mitigate risks of beetle infestations and wildfires along with innovative sustainable forest management techniques. Incidentally, insects and fire have emerged as the biggest challenges for the Canadian forestry sector, it noted.

The rising fire incidents and pest attacks have significantly impacted forest carbon emissions. For instance, large-scale natural disturbances had accounted for over 250 Mt of carbon dioxide emissions during 2018 alone.

In order to address the deteriorating climate-induced forest disturbances, more Canadian wood and wood-based products must be provided to Canada and the world. The federal government should ensure that sustainable forest management is front and centre in its National Adaptation Strategy. Also, the country must ensure growth of low-grade wood markets. Finally, government support is essential in further reducing GHG emissions at the pulp and paper mills in the country, FPAC said.
