SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Stora Enso announced fresh investment of EUR 23 million, aimed at boosting the flexibility and capacity at the Varkaus containerboard mill. The investment will also result in expanded capacity of using recycled fiber, in addition to fresh wood fiber.
The preparatory works on the proposed invest will commence immediately, with completion expected in 2022. The site will continue to operate normally throughout the investment phase. The final installations are scheduled to be held alongside the annual maintenance shutdown in late autumn 2022.
According to company press release, the investment will increase the flexibility of the product range available for customers. Furthermore, it will boost the site’s total capacity by nearly 10%. The site currently consumes about a third of the total packaging board recycled in Finland. The investment aims to further increase the use of recycled fiber as its raw material.
Jarkko Tehomma, Mill Director, Varkaus Packaging Board Mill said that the investment promises to improve production efficiency through technical changes in both the board machine and the pulp mill drying machine.
