The two companies were engaged in consultations over the past several years in connection with setting up of the plant. Further to this, a joint venture named Maruti Suzuki Toyotsu India (MSTI) was set up between the companies in 2019, in which Maruti Suzuki had 50% stake with the remaining 50% equally owned by Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Toyota Tsusho India.

The facility was inaugurated by Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who highlighted the important role played by state-of-the-art ELV scrapping and recycling units in meeting the guidelines of the National Automobile Scrappage Policy aimed at phasing out polluting vehicles from roads.

The Minister urged all industry stakeholders to focus on building such scrapping and recycling units across the country, so as to ensure that vehicles are scientifically disposed of at the end of their lives.
