SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The steel summit on ‘The Future of the Industry in a Sustainable World’, organized by the Latin American Steel Association (Alacero), urged all participating members to work towards materialization in facts and actions of the debates in steel sector.

In his opening address, Alejandro Wagner, Executive Director, Alacero noted that the steel sector in the region is currently undergoing drastic transformation to accompany the challenges to the sector. He urged the participants to join hands in generating a common roadmap, answers and concrete solutions and called upon the governments in the region to come up with necessary changes to public policies.

Máximo Vedoya, CEO of Ternium focused on the importance of initiating an open dialogue between the industry and the governments of the region to solve the problem of carbon emissions. Furthermore, he noted that success can be achieved only by providing more opportunities to attract the new generation of engineering talent.

The experts at the summit highlighted that decarbonisation initiative will help steel industry to move towards a more optimistic path. This could be achieved through various means such as increasing the efficiency of steel production, replacement of fuels with biomass and efficient reuse of electrical energy.
