Sonoco To Boost U.S. Paper Containers Recycling

The move reiterates Sonoco’s ongoing commitment to responsible material sourcing at its manufacturing facilities.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Hartsville, S.C.-based Sonoco announced its decision to expand post-consumer recovery and recycling opportunities for its EnviroCan paper containers in the U.S. These will be used as raw materials at ten U.S. paperboard mills towards production of new paperboard.

The move reiterates Sonoco’s ongoing commitment to responsible material sourcing at its manufacturing facilities. It ensures building material circularity with the used paper containers being recycled into a number of new fiber products, including new EnviroCan containers. The expansion demonstrates that paper containers with metal ends can be recycled not only through the steel stream, but also through the post-consumer mixed paper stream.

Elizabeth Rhue, staff vice president of sustainability at Sonoco stated that all of its U.S. paper mills have validated that they can accept rigid paper cans in bales of mixed paper coming from local MRFs. The company’s Menasha, Wis.Newport, Tenn.City of Industry, Calif.Hartsville, S.C.Holyoke, Mass.Richmond, Va.Sumner, Wash.Hutchinson, Kan., DePere, Wis., and Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. Mills will use these mixed paper to produce 100% recycled paperboard.
