Optimus Steel to Modernize Texas EAF Wire Rod Mill

The investment comprises installation of high-speed shears and two oil-film-bearing laying heads.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Beaumont, Texas-headquartered Optimus Steel Inc. announced major investment, aimed at modernizing the rolling process at its electric arc furnace (EAF) wire rod mill in Vidor, Texas. The company has already inked agreement with global equipment and technology provider Danieli towards supply and installation of equipment. The installation is expected to complete by the end of 2021.

The investment comprises installation of high-speed shears and two oil-film-bearing laying heads. These are expected to boost pipe life by up to six times, compared to conventional solutions. Danieli Automation will also deliver the accompanying electrical and automation package, said the company press release. Also parts of the project are a new coil-finishing area, a horizontal compactor and an unloading system.

Danieli will offer other mill improvements such as upgrading of the minimill’s existing water treatment plant. In addition, it will also supply a new plant in order to boost the plant’s environmental standards.

The technological update at the plant will boost production, product quality and safety standards at the plant facility. Moreover, it will help the plant to significantly reduce the EAF mill operator’s operating expenses.
