Mali Hit Record Gold Production in 2020

This is the second consecutive year that the country’s gold output has surpassed forecast.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The statistics published by Mali’s Mines Ministry denotes that the country’s industrial gold production hit new record in 2020. The production surpassed prior year’s record level to total 65.2 tonnes in 2020. Mali’s gold output had totalled 65.1 tonnes in 2019. The cumulative gold output by the country is estimated at 71.2 tonnes, including 6 tonnes of gold production by its artisanal miners.

The gold production by the country exceeded forecast of 59.7 tonnes, mainly due to improved technical performance by mining companies operating in the region, said Aboubacar Ogognagaly, head of the mines division. Incidentally, the country has nearly 13 operating mines run by mining majors including Barrick Gold, B2Gold and Resolute Mining. This is the second consecutive year that the country’s gold output has surpassed forecast.

Ogognagaly said that industrial gold production is expected to show further increase in 2021, although he declined to make any official production forecast.

Last week, Resolute Mining had upgraded the Tabakoroni Mineral Resource to 8.1 Mt at 4.9 g/t gold for a total of 1.26 Moz. Also, Altus Strategies plc had announced excellent results from preliminary metallurgical testwork at Tabakorole gold project, in addition to completion of 3,800 metre drilling programme at Lakanfla gold project. Marvel gold too had recently extended its landholding in Mali, after acquiring 80% interest in three gold projects.
