Ghana E-Waste Recycling Pilot Project Recorded Notable Progress

The initial phase of the project is being funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and the Government of Ghana.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The pilot phase of the e-waste recycling project in Ghana, implemented by the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) has reported significant progress. The pilot focuses on incentivizing the people in the informal sector to encourage them to dispose their waste in a responsible manner.

The initial phase of the project is being funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development and the Government of Ghana. The German government has allocated nearly 20 million Euros towards the project.

This phase aims to collect electronic waste from four primary sources-cables, batteries, thermoplastics and cathode ray tubes. A mini collection centre has been established at Abbogbloshie. Nearly 30 tonnes of materials have already been collected from various scrap dealers within the first three months of the operation of the collection centre. The project visualizes to ensure participation of all stakeholders in the e-waste value chain, in working towards eliminating the negative impacts of e-waste and generating more employment.

According to Mrs Lydia Essuah, the Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, MESTI, it plans to construct a handover centre in January 2021, which in turn will collect e-waste from informal sector and forward them to private waste management companies for recycling.
